As long as the songs had a limited audience, there was no problem, but as rap and hip hop artists who incorporated a lot of samples in their music became popular, the original artists started taking legal action. The original music composers accused the sample artists of copyright infringements, though some sample artists claimed "fair use" . Many of these cases were settled out of court, or the sample artists agreed to delete the sample from future releases of the song.
Today, most large music companies who use samples , either pay a fixed amount in advance to the sample producer or share royalties from the sale of the music. For smaller sample artists, sample CDs are available, which can be purchased for a small fixed fee.
